A clear distinction is often made between ‘mind’ and ‘body’. But when considering mental health and physical health, the two should NOT be thought of as separate. They are intrinsically linked.
Poor physical health can lead to an increased risk of developing mental health problems. Similarly, mental ill-health can negatively impact on physical health, leading to an increased risk of some conditions.
Many lifestyle factors can influence the state of both our physical and mental health:
Let us help you to invest time equally in the pillars of wellbeing: NUTRITION, ACTIVITY, SLEEP, RELAXATION & STRESS MANAGEMENT… helping you to tackle stress, prevent ill-health and better still excel!
Although stress can lead to physical and mental health conditions, and can aggravate existing conditions, the good news is that it can be tackled as we have said above by investing in wellbeing. A stress risk assessment is a popular and sound place to start.
We say prevention is better than cure! Commit to year round activities, conduct health checks, offer 1-2-1 coaching, educate and empower employees with the wellbeing tools they need; that said – start with your stress risk assessment (this is included in our Tonic & Me well@work App)
Back in 2017, the government commissioned Lord Stevenson and Paul Farmer (Chief Executive of Mind) to independently review the role employers can play to better support mental health in the workplace. The ‘Thriving at Work’ report sets out an impressive framework of actions called ‘Core Standards’ designed to help employers improve the mental health of their workplace and enable individuals to thrive.
We use this framework in the Tonic Toolbox, to tackle mental health as part of a whole. Our approach is holistic and we make wellbeing personal to your company and your people.
If we identify that you still need training then our awareness workshops and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses help raise awareness of mental illness, enabling people to support themselves and others to aid recovery. Our courses are designed to reduce stigma through education and increase the provision of care for those who really need it.
In our two hour Mental Health Awareness workshop, we aim to remove the stigma surrounding mental health in the workplace.
Mental Health – we all have it. So, just like our physical health, we all need to be aware of it. A recent Mental Health Foundation report has found that nearly 2/3 of us have experienced mental ill-health at some point in our lifetime and that just a shocking 13% of us are living with high levels of positive mental health.
We think that one of the biggest challenges with mental ill-health is removing the stigma and misconceptions that surrounds it. Many of us don’t hesitate to seek help for a physical pain or ailment yet so many of us ignore emotional or mental health issues or we feel ashamed or embarrassed. The sad truth is that there’s a general reluctance to admit to a mental health problem unlike that of any physical illness.
Mental ill-health is very common. All of us can benefit from greater awareness. In Part 1 we aim to raise the awareness of mental health and give a broad overview of what encompasses mental illness as well as recognising signs and symptoms in ourselves and those around us. In Part 2 we address the stigma. We focus on the links between physical and mental health. We provide staff with some general strategies to help support those who are worried about mental health and we signpost where to find extra support.
