Health Checks in the Workplace – Measure it to improve it!

| Nick Fildes

Workplace health checks are an effective solution to ensuring your people are in the best health possible.

If supporting employee mental and physical health is a priority in your organisation, then employee Health Checks should be a central part of your wellbeing programme. They enable you to track trends, deliver targeted wellbeing interventions and ultimately ensure your people are in the best health possible.

At Tonic Wellbeing, Health checks lie at the heart of our wellbeing toolbox. They are the start of the employee wellbeing journey and are a key factor in a long list of business outcomes, including healthcare costs, productivity, retention, safety, absenteeism, collaboration, and company culture.

In addition to which, with remote and/or hybrid working and limited access to GPs, when it comes to your people – your number one asset – do you know how emotionally and physically resilient they are? Do your employees even know themselves?

Showing you care about the mental and physical health of your people is vital to:

  • Make engagement sustainable.
  • Address absenteeism.
  • Attract & retain the best talent.
  • Make staff feel valued.
  • Reduce health, business and legal risks

The evidence is clear:

Absenteeism

According to the HSE 17.9 million days are lost each year to work-related stress, depression or anxiety.

Presenteeism

The CIPD reported that the cost to UK businesses of presenteeism is over £15 billion every day.

Recruitment

It is estimated that the cost of recruiting employees is at least 6 months’ salary and according to Oxford Economics could be higher still.

Healthcare

Business Health Insurance costs depend on various factors. Average cost £800 / employee per year. *with prices set to rise.

How does your organisation measure up?

A workplace health check is the place to start!

If your car wasn’t working one day you wouldn’t just leave it, you’d get it looked at straight away. So, if you’re feeling rundown, tired, or generally unwell you should not ignore those warning signs either.

This is where Tonic Wellbeing can really help!

You can select from 20, 30 or 45-minute sessions; and a 7, 15 or 22-point check.

Our 15 point check “Essential” health check allows you to benchmark overall employee health. Or upgrade, (as many clients are now) to our “Complete” health and lifestyle check including diabetes & cholesterol testing.

These 1-2-1 confidential checks (or as some clients like to call them “MOT sessions”) offer a true insight into employee and organisational health & wellbeing.

This is some of the feedback we have received this last couple of weeks since being back on site:

The Tonic And Me App

“The Tonic health checks are a great way to judge where your state of health is currently at and compare that with previous checks on the Tonic app. It’s better if this can be done regularly but this wasn’t the case with Covid of course, but hopefully, it will become the case again.”

Connections

“Due to Covid, some people have rarely been back to the office, but the Tonic session today helped with that, and I got to see people that I’ve not seen in a long time, so it has helped with getting connected again.”

Reassurance

“Well for me it’s all about having that reassurance from Tonic that I am on the right path when it comes to my health MOTs. It gives me structure to my lifestyle plan nutrition & exercise wise & Becca’s support is fantastic! Really looking forward to getting back in the office for the on-site reward days too, they’re such a treat & one that I so very much appreciate having access to”!”

Bigger Boost

“I have been absolutely delighted to benefit from Tonic’s services over the past few years and missed the checks during COVID. At last, they are back on site and now I continue to enjoy the boost they give to my life. The health checks are fantastic for keeping an eye on and improving your general wellbeing and determining small lifestyle changes you can make to be healthier. I would highly recommend these sessions to any organisations or individuals, who are looking to improve their & their staffs’ wellbeing”.

Measurement

The Tonic Health Checks are so great. They do everything from checking your weight, measurements, fat levels and hydration levels, along with measuring your Cholesterol and Glucose levels and checking for Diabetes. They are a great way to monitor your health and it’s great to see your results change over the coming months. Becca, Nick and the team are great. They give you that extra motivation to keep going and getting you on track to where you want to be.

Our “Complete health and lifestyle check” covers a huge range of metrics including all those the World Health Organisation (WHO) class as risk factors to health:

  • Weight
  • Height
  • Body mass index (BMI)
  • Body fat percentage
  • Visceral fat rating
  • Total body water
  • Muscle mass
  • Basal metabolic rate
  • Physique rating
  • Bone mineral mass
  • Blood pressure
  • Resting heart rate
  • Waist circumference
  • Hip measurement
  • Waist:Hip ratio
  • Cholesterol (TC)
  • HDL
  • TC/HDL ratio
  • TG/HDL ratio
  • LDL
  • Triglycerides (TG)
  • Glucose

Once our practitioner has taken measurements, we provide each employee with an immediate assessment of their health and wellbeing, including risk factors. But it doesn’t just end there, we ensure that we monitor and help to track these statistics to help everyone achieve their goals and ultimately optimum health, fitness, and wellbeing.

We also offer support and follow-ups in the form of lifestyle & behaviour change programmes, ensuring continuity of care. All this is delivered by your dedicated Tonic practitioner with support and tracking in the Tonic and Me app.

This is an end-to-end solution for your people from a team of experts. Our focus is always prevention, but we can also offer your employees a referral to our Occupational Health Doctor, if necessary.
