Simple ways to be more mindful
Mindfulness is the state of being aware. Being mindful has many advantages when it comes to our mental health and wellbeing especially. It can decrease stress, anxiety and depression; regulate emotions and really help us to focus. Our minds are constantly wondering – mine certainly is – thinking, analysing, planning – even about things that are not happening right in front of us, we miss half our lives due to a wondering mind. So, how do you stay mindful? Do you make a conscious effort? Here are some simple ways to help you to be more mindful …
1. TAKE A BREATH
Sometimes you just need to close your eyes and focus on your breath. Take some purposeful, deep breaths and follow each breath in and out of your body.
2. CONNECT WITH NATURE
Get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin or wind in your hair. Connect with nature and feel a sense of calm.
3. LEARN TO FOCUS
Stop wearing that ‘multi-tasker’ badge of honour and allow yourself to focus on one task at a time. You will be more effective – believe me you will.
4. SET BREAKS
Build a couple of re-set breaks into your day. Check in with yourself, see where you are at. Let go of anything which has already been done and allow yourself some space to be in the present moment.
5. SLOW IT DOWN
Try not to rush everything you do. It can lead to more mistakes and panic. Instead take your time. Pause for a moment. You will feel more fulfilled and connected with what you achieve.
6. EAT WELL
Make sure you are well hydrated and eating fresh, local produce were possible. Give yourself some space around each meal. Take the time to enjoy what you are eating; and make it nutrient dense.
7. LET GO OF NEGATIVE EMOTIONS
Check in with any negative emotions or judgements, acknowledge them without engaging and watch them pass by. You will feel calmer and more centered.
8. JUST STOP
When was the last time you stopped and sat still? It’s time to take a moment and just be you. Feel your heartbeat, feel your feet on the ground. Just take a moment.
