This week, 14th – 20th May, marks Mental Health Awareness Week. Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, this year the organisation have focused on the effects of stress.
“By tackling stress, we can go a long way to tackle mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, and in some instances, self-harm and suicide. We will look at how we can tackle stress and help improve our mental health.”
Across the UK, communities have come together to raise awareness for the foundation and try to break the stigma that still surrounds Mental Health.
In total, mental health is estimated to cost the UK economy upwards of £33 million every year.
But what can we do help? For many businesses, the responsibility of health and wellbeing sits with HR, and for smaller companies it may be the Owner or Managing Director.
Here at Tonic, we believe that we all have a pivotal role to play in making sure employees make use of the support available to them, so that staff can manage and protect their mental health in the same way as their physical health.
Unfortunately, a stigma still exists around mental ill-health. Research shows that 8 in 10 employers report no cases of employees disclosing mental health conditions and 30% of employees say that they wouldn’t feel able to talk openly with a line manager if they were feeling stressed.
Some individuals with mental health problems have even that the social stigma attached to the illness and the discrimination they experience can make their difficulties worse and ultimately make it harder to recover.

The Equality Act of 2010 made it illegal to discriminate directly or indirectly against people with mental health problems in public services and functions, access to premises, work, education, associations and transport.
