Tonic’s Top Tips to Protecting Your Wellbeing Over the Christmas Period

| Becca Clayton

For many of us, it is the most wonderful time of the year. We break up from work, get to spend plenty of time with our loved ones, consume copious amounts of good food and alcohol and give and receive heart-felt gifts. However, for some of us, it can all just get a little too much…

Christmas time – the season of joy and good will. The time of year traditionally considered the time to be happy and merry. And whilst this is the case for some of us, the demands which come with the festive season have proven to cause some of us more harm than good.

As we are start to look forward to Christmas films, mince pies, mulled wine and relaxing, for others it is the dreaded anxiety of pressure, financial trouble, overthinking, loneliness and under-performing.

We spend so much time thinking about others at this time of year, that we often forget to look after ourselves.

Emotional Wellbeing

Mental and emotional health doesn’t take time off at Christmas, and with all the added stress and demands which come with the Christmas period, it’s even more important for you to take care of your wellbeing. From feeling overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted and isolated, Christmas can be a very testing time for our mental and emotional health. Therefore, it is an extremely important time to make sure we are looking after ourselves as well as others.

Why not make time this Christmas for the following:

  • Make time for yourself and do something you enjoy
  • Meditate and practise some breathing for relaxation
  • Spend time with people who make you feel good
  • Do something kind for somebody else

Physical Wellbeing

During the Christmas period, we like to unwind and relax. However, spending too much time indoors doing nothing, can also have a negative effect on our bodies and minds. Physical activity and exercise is one of the best ways to put your mind at ease. It is Winter therefore there’s no need to push crazy hard and run a marathon however simple activities that get you moving and out of the house can be a great way to de-stress and refresh over festive period.

Why not incorporate some of these into your Christmas break:

  • Take festive walks with the family
  • Visit a local attraction or attend festive events
  • Go to an exercise class or gym
  • Eat well: choose nutrient dense fresh foods

Tonic’s Top Tips: Protecting Your Wellbeing

Whatever your plans are for this festive season, it is extremely important that they don’t leave you feeling exhausted, depressed, stressed or deflated. Instead, we want to ensure that when the new year dawns, you feel refreshed, rejuvenated and reinvigorated.

Here are our 10 top tips for protecting your wellbeing this Christmas:

  1. Be realistic about what you can achieve and buy for others.
  2. Don’t overspend, thinking about dreaded bills in January will leave you feeling more stressed.
  3. Plan in advance; create to-do lists. Don’t leave everything to the last minute.
  4. Take time out to relax and do something for yourself.
  5. Don’t drink to excess. Alcohol is a depressant. Consuming too much can leave you with a low mood, dehydrated and irritable.
  6. Ensure to get enough sleep. Being out of routine can mess with anyone’s sleeping pattern. Try to make sure to get enough quality sleep.
  7. Eat a balanced diet – we know we like to over indulge during the Christmas period, but try to eat a good, balanced diet which includes lots of seasonal produce where possible?
  8. Do some exercise. Whether it’s taking walks with the family or fitting in an exercise session, remember that exercise is good for the mind, soul and body and helps us ‘feel good.’
  9. Check up on family & friends. As we’ve mentioned, Christmas can be a lonely period for some people, therefore if everyone is checking up on someone, we will all have someone to turn to.
  10. Give to others – by doing something nice for someone this Christmas, it will have a positive effect on your mood.
