In general, December is a good time for morale; everybody in the office is on a high! Employees are looking forward to their Christmas party; to recognition and rewards from their managers and then breaking up for the festivities. How do we prolong this though? How do companies ensure those feel-good emotions and positivity continue for the other 11 months of the year?  Concrete research and evidence shows that workplace wellbeing programmes are not only welcomed, but they are highly sought after and desired. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a healthy workplace as one in which workers and managers collaborate to use a continual improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of workers and the sustainability of the workplace by considering the following:

  • Health and safety concerns in the physical work environment
  • Health, safety and wellbeing concerns in the psychosocial work environment, including organisation of work and workplace culture
  • Personal health resources in the workplace
  • Ways of participating in the community to improve the health of workers, their families and other members of the community.

In their document, ‘Framework and Model of a Healthy Workplace,’ they aim to make sense of the overabundance of information regarding a healthy workplace and provide guidance to those who are trying to make a difference in workplace health.
