Why Workplace Wellbeing Programmes are so Important Today
In general, December is a good time for morale; everybody in the office is on a high! Employees are looking forward to their Christmas party; to recognition and rewards from their managers and then breaking up for the festivities. How do we prolong this though? How do companies ensure those feel-good emotions and positivity continue for the other 11 months of the year? Concrete research and evidence shows that workplace wellbeing programmes are not only welcomed, but they are highly sought after and desired. We go one step further at Tonic and say a wellbeing programme should be embedded in to every company that is striving to attract, engage and retain talent!
“A recent study found that 45% of people working at SMEs would stay at their jobs longer if their company had a wellbeing programme in place”.
A Healthy Workplace
If you put the phrase ‘healthy workplace’ into the Google search engine, you get about 2,000,000 results. Clearly it’s a hot topic. Just like when you follow some of the links, there are thousands of interpretations of what the phrase means; thousands of providers of healthy workplace models; thousands of researchers looking into the subject.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a healthy workplace as one in which workers and managers collaborate to use a continual improvement process to protect and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of workers and the sustainability of the workplace by considering the following:
- Health and safety concerns in the physical work environment
- Health, safety and wellbeing concerns in the psychosocial work environment, including organisation of work and workplace culture
- Personal health resources in the workplace
- Ways of participating in the community to improve the health of workers, their families and other members of the community.
In their document, ‘Framework and Model of a Healthy Workplace,’ they aim to make sense of the overabundance of information regarding a healthy workplace and provide guidance to those who are trying to make a difference in workplace health.

Why You Should Invest in Workplace Programmes
Our client feedback highlights that employees not only feel good when their employer takes an interest in their health, it shows that their employer cares and this translates into loyalty. We have also found that the process of carrying out a health check is one thing, but finding someone (who is independant) and who understands an employees’ concerns and can talk them through with personalised pathways – is hugely important; and this means commitment, trust and reliabilty – in addition to better health behaviours!
Despite the well known saying ‘a healthy workforce is a happy one,’ here are the main reasons why you should invest in workplace programmes:
- Reduced Absences
- Higher Productivity
- Retention of Talent
- Attractive Employer Brand
- Dynamic Culture
- Happier Employees
