We have over 60,000 thoughts a day. Many of these are repetitive. Some are thoughts about the future, and some replaying past events, conversations & scenarios. Our lives are busy and our minds can feel even busier. Is meditation the answer? Let’s find out from our expert Deborah, why meditate?
Why Meditate?
A mindful meditation practice gives you the tools to become aware of the busy inner dialogue & stream of thoughts you are experiencing & it’s from this awareness you can begin to “watch” your thoughts & become aware that you are the “thinker of your thoughts”. Knowing that you are “the thinker of your thoughts” can bring about a sense of liberation from the seemingly endless thought-train.
Let’s look at some of the benefits that meditation can offer.
From a physiological perspective, the practice of meditation triggers the brain to release a beautiful cocktail of neurotransmitters, each responsible for different emotions.

• Dopamine – for pleasure, motivation & satisfaction.
• Serotonin – for regulating your “mood” & happiness.
• Oxytocin – for empathy & bonding.
• Endorphins – for joy & bliss.
Meditation sets of an inner chain reaction of beneficial & enhancing neurotransmitters (more than what is briefly mentioned above) and it offers you this without 1 single side-effect.
In addition, from a creativity perspective, meditation allows you to go beyond repetitive thought loops & conditioned thought-patterns & opens you up to a state of expanded awareness. This means that you may receive creative insights, have new perspectives & will be open to your intuition & innate inner wisdom.
A regular practice reduces the effects of stress. It soothes the nervous system & calms the fight or flight response. Stress is our personal response to what is happening around us, anxiety can be seen as a reaction to future events & scenarios. Our inner dialogue & thoughts can dramatically affect & define our lives. A meditation practice gives you the tools to tame the inner dialogue, to become aware that we are the “thinker of our thoughts” and knowing this, having the tools to simply sit & meditate we can transform our thoughts, mind, behaviour & life.
