Stress Leaves Clues: The Case for Regular Health Checks

| Nick Fildes

By Dr Nick Fildes Lead Tonic Wellbeing Practitioner and Becca Clayton, Founder & CEO, Tonic Wellbeing

We all experience stress. It’s part of being human — a response that helps us adapt, protect ourselves and ultimately perform at our best.

But when stress becomes constant, our bodies begin to whisper warning signs long before we consciously register that something’s wrong. The challenge is that most of us aren’t listening.

At Tonic Wellbeing, we often say that “stress leaves clues.”

In our sleep. In our digestion. In our energy levels. In the numbers that quietly define our health. Those clues are data — and data, used wisely, can be one of the most powerful wellbeing tools we have.

Stress isn’t just emotional — it’s physiological

When you’re under stress, your body activates its “fight or flight” system. Cortisol and adrenaline flood your system, heart rate rises, blood pressure increases, and blood sugar spikes — all designed to help you cope with a short-term challenge.

That’s fine when it happens occasionally. But when this response becomes your daily norm, the body never gets a chance to switch off or repair.

Over time, this can show up as:

  • Raised resting heart rate
  • High blood pressure
  • Fatigue or poor sleep quality
  • Increased visceral fat
  • Changes in blood glucose or cholesterol
  • Frequent illness or inflammation

These aren’t just random fluctuations. They’re the body’s way of saying:

“You’re running too fast, for too long.”

The data doesn’t lie

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), stress, depression, and anxiety account for over half of all work-related ill health and more than 17 million lost working days every year in the UK.

Yet despite this, less than 1 in 3 employees say they’ve ever had a formal health check through their workplace.

Most people only check their numbers when something starts to go wrong.

But wellbeing checks often reveal a different story — one of hidden stress.

We’ve seen countless examples where someone feels “fine” but their results tell another story: elevated blood pressure, poor sleep patterns, or low heart rate variability (HRV). These early indicators act as a powerful nudge to slow down, reset, and make meaningful changes before symptoms escalate.

Stress awareness isn’t just about feelings – it’s about feedback

Stress management has traditionally focused on emotional awareness — noticing thoughts, moods, and behaviours. That’s important, but it’s only half the picture.

Your body is constantly collecting its own data. Every heart beat, every breath, every night’s sleep tells a story about your recovery and resilience.

When you bring subjective awareness (how you feel) together with objective data (what your numbers show), you move from guesswork to prevention.

That’s the sweet spot where wellbeing science meets everyday action.

The ripple effect in the workplace

For organisations, this data-driven approach changes the conversation from reactive support to proactive care.

Regular health checks don’t just benefit individuals – they create a culture that values prevention, performance, and trust.

When employees know their health is being looked after, engagement rises, absenteeism falls, and the whole culture shifts from coping to thriving.

It’s no surprise that CIPD’s latest Health & Wellbeing at Work Report found that organisations with proactive wellbeing strategies see lower sickness absence and stronger productivity outcomes than those without.

Listening to your body — before it shouts

So how do you know if stress is starting to take its toll?

Start small:

  • Check your pulse and sleep quality regularly — both are early stress markers.
  • Notice your recovery — do you bounce back after pressure, or stay wired and tired?
  • Look at the numbers — blood pressure, heart rate, visceral fat, hydration, cholesterol.
  • Book a health check — an investment in awareness, not just assessment.

Your body is giving you feedback all the time — the question is whether you’re listening.

Final thought

“Stress will always be part of life,” says Becca. “The goal isn’t to eliminate it — it’s to understand it. When we recognise stress early and focus on what’s within our control, we move from reaction to intelligent response.

Regular health checks are one of the simplest and most empowering ways to do that. Because when you understand your numbers, you don’t just manage your health — you master it. And that’s where prevention becomes power.”
