The Warning Signs of Stress – Are You Aware?

April is Stress Awareness Month, a UK-wide programme of activities to increase awareness about the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic.

According to the Mental Health Foundation

“74% of UK adults have felt so stressed at some point over the last year they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope”.

Clearly we still have a long way to go! It really is time to act… millions of us are suffering and it is damaging to our health and our performance. 

Plus, in our new hybrid workplaces, it is more difficult than ever to spot the tell-tale signs of stress. And if you can’t spot the causes how can you help your staff to handle stress? Better still how can you manage it and prevent it?

How to Spot the Effects & Signs of Stress at Work

This is where we have to start, so it is vital that communication is maintained between staff and management, especially for those of us who are physically apart for much of our working week. This is easier said than done. This is why we recommend arranging regular 1-2-1 catch-ups with individual employees (outside of your daily team calls). This will give you an opportunity to ask them how they’re feeling and determine if there’s anything you can do (as the employer and manager) to provide them with extra support.

In some cases it may be hard for an employee to open up to their manager. For example, they may feel their job is at risk if they show signs of not being able to cope. Even if they do not talk about problems there may be signs of stress such as reduced work output, inability to concentrate, taking time off sick. Check out the physical and emotional effects below – these are NOT to be ignored!

The Stress Curve










The Yerkes-Dodson Curve (or as we call it – the Stress Curve) is a model of the relationship between stress and performance.  It proposes that we reach our peak level of performance with an intermediate level of stress, or arousal. Too little (and you become bored and unaware) or too much (and you risk anxiety and burnout), both result in poorer performance. Where do you think you are on the curve right now?
