The Importance of Mental Health Self-Care.

| Becca Clayton

Self-care is something that everyone should practice but the definition can be different depending on the individual. Practicing self-care is all about physical and mental wellbeing. It should be a daily priority – even for a few minutes.

Definition of Self-Care

Self-care (by definition) is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health. The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own wellbeing and happiness, especially during periods of stress.

For many of us self-care is going for a walk, going to the gym, meeting with friends or as simple as a good night’s sleep. The key is, it’s a daily practise and that it covers all pillars of self-care -physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. The ultimate benefit of it is to reduce stress and anxiety that can build up throughout the day, especially at work.

9th–15th May 2022 was Mental Health Awareness Week, and now is the perfect time to take stock of how you’re feeling both physically and mentally. We all need to hit the reset button occasionally, and at Tonic Wellbeing we have a simple tool to help you.

‘How Are You Feeling Today’ questionnaire

Our ‘How Are You Feeling Today’ questionnaire lists a few simple questions with a rating from 1-10. The goal is to answer them as openly and honestly as possible which will provide you with an accurate reflection as to how you are feeling from a mental health perspective.

It is vital to remind ourselves…. self-care is not selfish! Becca says, “It is an essential step to maintaining good overall health & wellbeing. Taking small steps every day to create a holistic approach to looking after your health will have multiple benefits, from improving your quality of life, boosting your happiness and preventing illness!

Taking care of our mental health is not always as easy as taking care of our physical wellbeing. If we need to exercise, we can go to the gym, go for a run, or walk. But how do you train your brain or even relax the mind? Taking a few minutes to answer our questionnaire will allow you to focus on how you’re feeling mentally. It will also heighten your awareness of any warning signs of anxiety, stress or perhaps depression?

Your mental wellbeing should be a daily priority whether that’s first thing in the morning or last thing at night (or both). Once you get into the habit of practicing positive mental wellbeing you’ll be surprised at the benefits and how much better you’ll feel, consistently.
