The Importance of Mental Health Self-Care

| Becca Clayton

Self-care is something that everyone should practice but what it is can be different depending on the individual. Practising self-care is all about physical and mental wellbeing and it should be a daily priority – even for a few minutes.

Self-care (by definition) is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health. The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own wellbeing and happiness, especially during periods of stress.

For many of us, self-care is going for a walk, going to the gym, meeting with friends, or as simple as a good night’s sleep.

The key is, it’s a daily practice and that is is holistic – physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. The ultimate benefit of it is to reduce stress and anxiety that can build up throughout the day, especially at work.

Sunday 10th October is World Mental Health Day, this is the perfect time to take stock of how you’re feeling both physically and mentally. We all need to hit the reset button occasionally, and at Tonic Wellbeing we have a simple tool to help you.

Our ‘How Are You Feeling Today self-score questionnaire lists a few simple questions with a rating from 1-10. The goal is to answer them as openly and honestly as possible. It will provide you with an accurate reflection as to how you are feeling from a mental health perspective, and also help you help others around you, if you share it too.

It is vital to remind ourselves…. self-care is not selfish!  Becca says, “It is an essential step to optimising our health & wellbeing. Taking small steps every day to create a holistic approach to looking after your health WILL improve your quality of life & boost your happiness.

Taking a few minutes to answer a few questions such as this will allow you to focus on how you’re feeling mentally and be able to understand any warning signs of anxiety, stress, or perhaps depression.

Your mental wellbeing should be a daily priority whether that’s first thing in the morning or last thing at night – once you get into the habit of practicing positive mental wellbeing you’ll be surprised at the benefits and how much better you’ll feel.
