Why Trying to Relax Can Be Stressful

Have you ever tried to relax but just found yourself getting more stressed because you simply can’t unwind – don’t worry, it happens to all of us. In this article, we look at some of the reasons why it can be hard to relax.


Often when we have a lot going on during the day the body can produce adrenaline which puts your body and mind on high alert.

These neurotransmitters can be great if you need a burst of energy to get a specific task done, but they can have a detrimental effect when you are trying to relax.

One way to help relaxation is to reduce any stimulating activities towards the end of the day. While this can be hard to let go of if you have a busy job or lifestyle, doing so will help you relax and unwind. Remember resting is doing!

Meditation and box breathing are very good relaxation techniques that can help cure an overstimulated body and mind.

Follow a Routine

Your brain is a super powerful tool, and it needs to be looked after just like other parts of your body. Promoting mindfulness can help train the brain to relax. You might choose to meditate or exercise at certain times of the day or have a bedtime routine that helps you to relax and get to sleep.

By following a routine your brain will be familiar with the different relaxation techniques, and you will not only be able to relax but you will improve your mental health and wellbeing.

Burn Energy

Another reason you might be finding it hard to relax is if you have a lot of excess energy. Many people with a sedentary office job don’t find the time to get up and move around or take time out to exercise properly.

Exercise can be a great way to help you relax and while that might sound counterintuitive, exercising burns off the excess energy allowing you to focus more on relaxation techniques later.

Don’t Stress

Trying to relax can be very frustrating if you’re not in the right frame of mind and as a result, you become stressed because you can’t relax.

Try and look for new and unique relaxation methods that you may not have tried or experienced before such as Pilates, yoga or even box breathing.

It could even be as simple as a warm bath or a long walk, take note of the relaxation techniques that frustrate you and those that don’t.
