Resilience Isn’t About Bouncing Back – It’s About Carrying On With Love

| Becca Clayton

August has always been a reflective month for me. A quiet space between the rush of summer and the stirrings of autumn. But this year, it carries a weight and a softness I wasn’t prepared for.

Last Monday, we said goodbye to our beautiful goldendoodle, Angel. Fifteen years of love, loyalty, laughter, and long walks. She was by my side through so many chapters – the growth of Tonic, the highs and heartbreaks of life, and the quiet moments in between. Her loss is a heartbreak I feel in every cell.

And yet… we carry on.

Not because it’s easy.

Not because we’re ready.

But because life asks us to – and resilience is how we answer.

What Resilience Really Means

We often talk about resilience as “bouncing back.” But that never quite fit for me. I don’t think we bounce anywhere after grief or challenge. We shift. We stretch. We slowly rebuild, shaped by what we’ve been through.

Resilience isn’t toughness. It’s not pretending you’re okay when you’re not.

It’s choosing to feel what you feel and still show up.

It’s being cracked open and still growing.

It’s letting love in again, even after loss.

How To Build Your Resilience

The good news – you can build resilience. This Tonic Boost breaks it down into five practical, powerful areas: Emotional Intelligence, Energy, Relationships, Perspective, and Priorities. By strengthening these foundations, you give yourself the tools to respond to life’s challenges with clarity, courage, and calm. Whether you’re navigating stress, grief, or everyday pressures, this visual is your reminder that resilience is within reach — one small shift at a time.

Emotional Intelligence helps you understand and manage your emotions, so they work for you, not against you, especially in times of stress or uncertainty.
Energy is your fuel; when you prioritise rest, movement, nutrition, and recovery, you create the capacity to cope and thrive.
Relationships act as your safety net — trusted connections provide emotional support, perspective, and a sense of belonging when life feels heavy.
Perspective allows you to zoom out, reframe challenges, and see setbacks not as failures but as part of your growth journey.
Priorities anchor you — when you know what truly matters, it becomes easier to say no to overwhelm and yes to what restores you.

The Science Behind It

From a wellbeing perspective, resilience is deeply linked to:
Emotional regulation – the ability to sit with discomfort without being swept away by it.
Connection – having people (or pets) who help us feel safe and seen.
Meaning-making – being able to make sense of our experiences and find purpose in them.
Self-care – sleep, movement, nourishment, and rest – the foundations that support recovery.

Our nervous system is always listening. And every choice we make – a walk outside, a moment of stillness, a phone call with a friend helps rewire us.

What I’ve Learned (so Far)

Resilience isn’t something we do once. It’s something we practise. Especially in grief.

I’ve learned that:
🌿 Some days, strength looks like a deep breath and a slow walk.
🌿 It’s okay to laugh and cry in the same hour.
🌿 We don’t have to rush healing – there’s wisdom in the waves.

And Angel? She taught me resilience long before I realised. Through patience. Through presence. Through her unconditional love.

A Note For You

If you’re feeling broken or brittle right now, please know this:
You’re not failing – you’re feeling. And that takes courage.

Resilience isn’t about getting over it.

It’s about getting through it – with grace, with grit, and in your own time. Reach out to friends, protect your energy and prioritise.

This month at Tonic, we’re leaning into this theme of resilience – through meditations, movement, insights, and gentle reminders that you are never alone.
